Kiwi Travel Agents Conclude World-leading Family to China

6th June 2024 – A group of travel agents and industry representatives have returned from an enriching family trip to China, fostering a deeper understanding of China as a key travel destination for New Zealanders.

Hosted by China Travel Services (CTS), Air New Zealand, Air China and the China Culture Centre Auckland, the nine-day trip covered major cultural and historical destinations in Shanghai, Wuhan, Wudang Mountains, and Beijing.

Lisa Li, Managing Director of CTS New Zealand says this custom itinerary provided participants with an immersive experience of China’s vibrant culture, exquisite cuisine, and renowned landmarks.

“Hosting New Zealand agents in China allowed them to see first-hand the travel offerings available in the region. Whether it’s exploring The Forbidden City in Beijing, learning Tai chi in the Wudang Mountains, or savouring a variety of traditional Chinese dishes, China is a treasure trove for Kiwis seeking adventure, culture and bucket-list experiences.

“What was special about this trip was that it was one of the first family trips in the world to visit the Hubei region following the reopening of borders, further reinforcing how important the New Zealand market is to Chinese travel operators.”

To mark this significant occasion, the family group was accompanied by Chinese television crews throughout the trip, and their activities were covered by China Central Television.

Fraser Smith from Flight Centre said Chinese cuisine was a highlight.

“We tried dumplings, Peking Duck, hotpot, Chinese crayfish, and scorpion! It was great to taste and be introduced to China’s rich culinary heritage.

“This trip was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me. China is on a lot of people’s bucket lists, and it’s great to see how welcoming and friendly the locals are to having tourists back in the region”.

Tasmyn Cleland from FCTG Independent says she struggles to pick a favourite moment of the trip.

“The Great Wall was a magical experience; our guide took us to a spot where there were no tourists, and it felt like we had the wall to ourselves. The evening cruises in Shanghai and Wuhan were great for Instagram, and I got my shopping fix with a visit to the Pearl Market, where I bargained with the locals.

I will definitely be encouraging our agents and brokers to sell one of the most exciting travel destinations in the world”.
